Sport City Dodgeball Rules

First and foremost all Sport City leagues are designed to make sure everyone has fun.  We expect individuals to respect the league’s culture of fair and fun play. Foul language and rough play will not be tolerated and individuals who cannot adhere to our standards of fair play and sportsmanship may be asked to leave the league. Sport City wants everyone to have a fun and be social while enjoying a great sport. Sport City will do whatever they can to make sure all players are having fun.

1.  EQUIPMENT

Sport City will provide equipment.  Which will consist of :

•           6 regulation size balls shall be used: 3 Big Balls (8.5") and 3 Small Balls (6").

•           Ball layout goes as follows: Big, Small, Big, Small, Big, Small.

a. Jerseys: All players are required to wear their Sport City jerseys.

b. Shoes: Only tennis, court, volleyball, or basketball shoes with pliable synthetic or rubber soles shall be worn. No marking black-soled shoes, boots, or running shoes will be allowed.

c. No jewelry is allowed on any participant. All jewelry must be removed before entering the game.

d. Ball: A ball will be provided; however, each team may provide their own volleyball.

2.  PARTICIPANTS

All players must be 21 years of age or older. Players may only play on a team on which they are registered. Exception: You may function as a substitute player for another team if they are short a man or woman. This is ONLY valid during the regular season.

3.  TEAMS

Sport City is proud to relieve captains of the burden of paying for full teams. While captains and players are able to prepay for additional players and or full teams, it is not a requirement for participation in our leagues. We welcome individual player payments. We are also proud to welcome those who do not have a full team (small groups and free agents) to participate in our league. Only online payments made through www.SportCityrec.com or a team check for our corporate teams are acceptable forms of payment.

Our primary mission is to make it easier for people to have fun and get involved with social sports and these policies help accomplish that goal.

Because of these policies all registrations are on a first come first serve basis and any roster that does not reach our standard size (based on each sport) is eligible to receive free agents and or small group by the league. Rosters made up of primarily free agents and or a collection of small groups may field more players than the standard roster size. This policy is in place to help ensure free agent teams are able to consistently field teams each week.

4.  CAPTAINS

Each team shall have one Captain and one Co-Captain who are charged with:

-       Making sure that only players registered on their team are participating on their behalf in a game.

-       Insuring that their players substitute in the same order throughout the game

-       Disputing a call on the court and remaining cool at all times.

-       Making sure everyone on their team understands the rules.

-      Turning in the game results to the appropriate person.

-      Staying in contact with Sport City and attending all required league meetings.

-       Communicating any changes in regards to scheduling or rules with his/her team.

-       Ensuring that everyone on his/her team is eligible to play.

-       Contacting the other team and the league in the event of a forfeit by 2:00 pm.

5. The Court

The official dimensions for a regulation court are as follows:

  • The court is divided into two 30' X 30' areas, with a 4' X 30' neutral zone located at center court separating the two sides, an attack line located parallel and 10' from the center line, for a total court length of 60' from endline to endline, and a total width of 30' from sideline to sideline.
  • Approximately 2'-3' should be allotted for an out of bound area, allowing officials to move freely along the sidelines.
  • The Queue for each team is a 3' X 12' area, and should be located 2'-3' from the sideline, leaving enough room for an official to move free along the sideline.
  • Every effort should be made to obtain the correct dimensions. However court size may be adjusted to best suit the available space.

6. Players

  • Teams consist of six players with up to four substitutes. All players must be in uniform.
  • Teams must consist of either gender, however at least two players of each gender must participate at the start of each game. No more than four players of the same sex allowed on the court per team.

7. Substitutions

Substitutions must be made prior to the start of the game. No substitutions can be made during a game, except in cases of injury.

8. Game Time

A game is played for 3 minutes or until all opponents are eliminated on one side which ever one occurs first.  If time expires, all remaining players are counted. The team with most players remaining wins the game.

9.  Rules of the Game

Play begins with all players positioned behind their team's end line.

A. The Blitz

  • The Blitz occurs at the beginning of each game or reset.
  • Upon the official's signal, both teams rush to center court and attempt to retrieve as many balls as possible.
  • A team may rush with as many or as few players as it wants, but at least one person from each team has to Blitz.
  • There is no limit to how many balls an individual player may retrieve.
  • Players may not physically grab the ball and must it back towards their side.
  • Players may not slide or dive head first into the neutral zone or they will be called out.
  • Crossing over the neutral zone will result in an "out."
  • Players may not pull another player across the neutral zone or prevent them from returning to their side of the court.

B. Putting a Ball in Play

The player and the ball must go completely behind the attack line and then the official will blow the whistle to start the game and the 3 min clock.

C. Time Outs

There are no team time outs

D. Outs

  • A player shall be deemed "out" when a live ball hits any part of the player's body, clothing, or uniform.
  • If a player is hit by a live ball rebounding off another player or ball lying on the court.
  • A defending player catches a live ball they have thrown
  • Players shall return from the Queue in the order they were put "out" (i.e. first "out," first "in").

E. Blocking

  • Players can defend themselves by blocking the ball in flight with another ball but must retain control over the ball they are blocking with. A player dropping or losing possession of the blocking ball is deemed "out."
  • Any blocked ball rebounding off another ball is considered live. Any player hit by the rebounding ball is deemed "out."

F. Squeeze Play

The act of squeezing the ball in order to alter the thrown or blocked ball is not allowed.

G. Stalling

  • The act of intentionally delaying the game.
  • If a referee determines that a player or team is stalling, the referee will warn player or team. If the stalling continues, at the referee’s discretion, player or team will lose possession of all balls on their side.
  • If both teams are stalling a reset should occur

H. Out of Bounds Rule

  • If any part of the player's body touches the end lines or far neutral zone line, the player shall be deemed "out".
  • Momentum may carry a player out of bounds while making a catch. Providing control of the ball was established prior going out of bounds.

I. Center Line Rule

  • Any player crossing over the center line is deemed "out."
  • With the exception of an attacking player may legally cross the center line and jump to hit an opponent but the ball must leave the attacker's hand before any part of the attacker's body touches the opponent's territory. If successful, the player hit is out and attacking player remains in.

J. Headshots

  • A headshot occurs when a player is hit directly in the head by a high thrown ball.
  • Any thrower committing a headshot will be deemed "out."
